British Steel announced on Tuesday (May 31) that it is conducting a major study into the use of green hydrogen, as the company strives to decarbonise its operations and manufacture Net Zero steel.
Collaborating with EDF UK, University College London (UCL), and the Materials Processing Institute, the steelmaker aims to deliver net-zero steel by 2050, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and 2035.
If successful, British Steel has said it will roll out green hydrogen powered production at an industrial-scale demonstration, which could see the method taken up at its main manufacturing base in Scunthorpe, England.
It is hoped that other steel manufacturers may follow British Steel’s lead.
