Presentation Title | The Degradation and Durability of Hydrogen PEM Fuel Cells | |
Abstract | Hydrogen PEM (proton exchange membrane) fuel cells have made significant technical progress and have reached early stage of commercial applications. However, cost reduction and durability improvement, the two interrelated technical challenges, are required for widespread commercial adoption. In this presentation, the degradation mechanism leading to the durability reduction is summarized, including thermal degradation, chemical degradation and mechanical degradation; efforts for their analyses and simulations are described, interactions between the different degradation mechanisms are outlined for accelerated degradation. Various test protocols for the accelerated stress tests (ASTs) will be previewed, and methods to mitigate the various degradation mechanisms will be discussed. Finally some of our own efforts in the field will be shared. The current effort will be presented with the objective of achieving low cost, highly performing and durable hydrogen fuel cells with high power density. To achieve this technical target, it is necessary to combine the efforts in the development of low cost, highly performing and durable fuel cell materials, fuel cell manufacturing/processing techniques and design optimization, with a good understanding of fundamentals and command of applied aspects for the technology development, involving phenomena at the nano-, micro-, and macro-scales. | |
Biographical Sketch |
Dr. Xianguo Li is a Professor of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering, and a University Research Chair, at the University of Waterloo. Dr. Li is internationally recognized for his research in the area of fuel cells, liquid fuel atomization and sprays, and green energy systems. His book, Principles of Fuel Cells, is the world’s first textbook on fuel cells and is used worldwide. Dr. Li has more than 210 journal and 250 conference publications. He has also authored/co-authored 4 books, over 20 book chapters, and 13 patent applications. His published articles have received extensive citations, with an H index of over 60. Dr. Li serves as the editor in chief for the International Journal of Green Energy, and also established the International Green Energy Conference series. He serves on the editorial/advisory board for more than 20 journals, book series, encyclopedia and handbooks. He is the founding division chair for the CSME Advanced Energy Systems Division, CSME Vice President Technical Program; President of the Fuel Cell Division of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy, and has also served as guest editors for a number of journals. He is a fellow of Canadian Academy of Engineering, Engineering Institute of Canada, and Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME). |
